Dear Colleen: From Where Do You Source Your Ingredients?

We carefully source our fruit from farms in Washington, Oregon, and California.  Because our recipes use purees or chopped whole fruit, we can  use the farms’ “ugly” fruit to help cut down on food waste.  What is ugly fruit? It is delicious fruit that is misshapen or discolored, so it won’t sell well as whole fruit in grocery stores.

Our sunflower seeds and oats are grown in the midwestern region of the US. Our organic chia and organic sacha inchi are imported because they do not grow well in the U.S.  Sometimes our organic pumpkin seeds (pepitas) are imported if we cannot find an appropriate U.S. source but we are hoping to find a reliable U.S. source in early 2020.

Why is it important to know where your brands source their food from? The food supply chain in our world is very complex and tracking food sold to brands through middle men (or brokers) can be difficult even in the U.S. It can be downright impossible when you source from overseas. That means, for example, that your New Zealand honey could be from China via Turkey, making it more likely to be adulterated with other syrups or to have high heavy metal contamination caused by industrialization.

Of course, fraud and chemical contamination can happen anywhere. So regardless of where our ingredients come from, we purity test all our products for over 400 different potential and known toxins, like glyphosate (Round Up). We test ingredients for heavy metals if they are crops with a history of high levels, like protein powder and chocolate.

We give you peace of mind by giving you access to the purity test results for each product. Just scan the QR code on any of our packages or go to the Purity Testing menu tab on our website to see them.

Enjoy mother nature’s bounty,

Colleen
