ZEGO Honored as “Best in World” for Positive Community Impact
SAN FRANCISCO, CA ZEGO, a San Francisco-based company, has been honored as “Best in the World” for the positive impact it has on the community. This award was based on an independent, comprehensive assessment administered by the B Lab, the nonprofit that certifies Benefit Corporations. Honorees are scored in the top 10% of all B Corp certified companies in the world and are featured on B the Change by B Lab, at bthechange.com/bestfortheworld. ZEGO is one of only 13 food manufacturers in the U.S. to receive this distinction in the community category.
ZEGO made the list thanks to its exceptional practices of donating a percentage of its revenue to improving nutrition for low-income children, providing pioneering block chain transparency with allergy and gluten testing data, and donating snacks to allergy friendly summer camps, 2017 hurricane and fire disaster relief efforts, and other community needs. ZEGO is also a woman-owned business.
According to company owner and founder, Colleen Kavanagh,
“We are honored ZEGO has been recognized by B Lab as Best in the World for our work supporting our community. From the onset, we wanted ZEGO not only to make delicious, nutritious snacks that are also safe for most “free from” special diets, but also to make a positive difference in our world. We are passionate about both our block chain approach to food safety that combines dynamic labeling, testing, and data sharing and our commitment to use regional U.S. farms for our suppliers, as the best way to support our customers’ health, our environment and our country.”
To certify as a B Corp, companies like ZEGO must complete the rigorous assessment and have their answers verified by B Lab, the nonprofit certifier of B Corporations. The full assessment measures a company’s impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. Honorees scoring in the top 10 percent in any section are considered as setting a gold standard for how business can be a force for good around the world.
“With the rise of anger at a system that feels rigged, people are hungry for companies like ZEGO, who are changing the system by building businesses that seek to create the greatest positive impact,” says Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab. “Best For The World is the only list of businesses that uses comprehensive, comparable, third-party-validated data about a company’s social and environmental performance.”
The Community portion of the B Corp certification evaluates a company’s supplier relations, diversity, and involvement in the local community. It also measures the company’s practices and policies around community service and charitable giving, including whether a company’s product or service is designed to solve a social issue, such as access to basic services, health, education, economic opportunity and the arts.
