When it comes to nutritious, versatile grains, millet is a hidden gemâespecially for the gluten-free and allergy-friendly community. This ancient grain is not only good for you but also supports sustainable farming practices. Thanks to partnerships like the Collaborative Integrated Value Chain (CIVC), millet is poised to take its rightful place on your table.
Be sure to watch the short video below featuring Colleen Kavanagh, where she shares why millet is such an important crop and how ZEGOâs partnership with CIVC is helping bring it to your table.

Millet is a small-seeded grain classified as an “ancient grain.”
Known for its resilience, proso millet requires less water than traditional staples like rice and corn. It thrives in various U.S. climates, including those prone to drought, making it a climate-friendly crop.
Why Millet Matters to the Gluten-Free and Allergy-Friendly Community
Millet is naturally gluten-free and free from the top allergens, making it a safe and inclusive option for those with celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or food allergies. Its mild flavor and versatility allow it to be used in everything from flour for baking to a hearty base for porridge, salads, or bowls.
Nutritionally, this grain is a powerhouse. Itâs high in protein, rich in fiber, and contains essential nutrients like magnesium and B vitamins, making it a valuable addition to any diet. For those looking for clean, nutritious, and allergen-friendly options, millet ticks all the boxes.
Why Aren’t We Eating More of this Ancient Grain?
Historically, millet was a staple crop in many parts of the world. However, over time, farming subsidies in the U.S. shifted agricultural productionâand our dietsâtoward wheat and soy. This shift pushed grains like millet out of the mainstream, leaving it underutilized despite its many benefits. Unfortunately, this also means small-scale farmers who grow millet often struggle to find buyers; and larger mills typically prioritize high-volume crops.
How ZEGO and CIVC Are Bringing Millet Back
At ZEGO, weâre committed to partnering with farmers to reintroduce millet into the market. Our work with CIVC is a key part of this effort. Through this partnership, weâre supporting farmers in growing organic, gluten-free millet as part of their rotational crop practices. This approach improves soil health, reduces heavy metal uptake in plants, and promotes sustainable farming.
This collaboration also allows us to develop the infrastructure needed to process and dehull millet. This ensures we can deliver purity-verified, U.S.-grown millet flour that meets the highest safety and quality standards.
Milletâs versatility makes it ideal for baking bread, making pancakes, or serving as a nutritious main or side dish. Are you ready to get cooking with this healthy, gluten-free grain? Visit our friends at Snacktivist Foods for some creative and delicious millet recipes!
Stay tuned for updates as we bring purity-verified, U.S.-grown millet products to your pantry soon!

đž Celebrating Wild Rice: A Sacred and Nourishing Grain đž
This month, in honor of Indigenous Peoplesâ Day, weâre highlighting culturally significant foods that have nourished communities for generations.
Today, weâre celebrating wild rice â or manomin, meaning âgood berry,â as itâs known by the Ojibwe and Chippewa peoples who have harvested it for centuries. đż
Though often called rice, wild rice is actually the seed of an aquatic grass that grows in lakes and slow-moving rivers across North America. Itâs a great source of protein, fiber, and B vitamins, and it remains an essential part of both cultural traditions and sustainable foodways.
Letâs honor the deep connections between food, land, and heritage – and celebrate the incredible biodiversity that nourishes us all. đ

đžâ¨ On Indigenous Peopleâs Day, we honor the traditions of Indigenous communities who continue to cultivate and protect ancient grains.â
â
Grains like millet, amaranth, quinoa, wild rice, and corn are not only nourishing foods but also living connections to culture, ceremony, and sustainable farming practices. These grains play a vital role in shaping healthier, more resilient food systems today.â
â
At ZEGO, we celebrate ancient grains for both their nutrition and the enduring traditions they represent – stories of connection to the land, respect for biodiversity, and care for future generations. đđ

What does real transparency look like?
Â
At the Regenerative Food Systems Investment Forum, ZEGO founder Colleen Kavanagh shared how weâre setting a higher standard for purity – one thatâs backed by data, not just promises.
Â
Did you know?
Â
USDA average glyphosate in oats: 630 parts per billion.
ZEGO oats: under 10.
Â
Thatâs the difference when your mission is clean food you can trust. đą

đ This saying is often linked to Native American traditions, though its exact origins are unclear. The message, however, is universal: caring for the earth is caring for our childrenâs future. đâ
â
Every choice we make todayâhow we grow our food, what we put on our plates, and how we care for the landâshapes the world the next generation will inherit. đąâ
â
By supporting sustainable farming and choosing foods grown with integrity, weâre not just nourishing ourselves, weâre protecting the soil, the water, and the planet our children will call home. đžâ¨â
â
Letâs keep working together to leave behind an earth thatâs even healthier and more vibrant than the one we were given.

đž What is Purity Protocol?â
And why does it matter if youâre gluten-free?â
â
Oats are naturally gluten-free, of course, but they can easily get contaminated with wheat at every step â from farm to package:â
â
đ Farming: Oats are often grown near or after wheat, leading to grain mix-ups in the field.â
đ Processing: Many facilities use the same equipment for wheat and oats.â
đŚ Packaging: Oats may be packed alongside gluten-containing grains.â
â
Unlike conventional oats, which rely on machines to try to sort out gluten-containing grains like wheat and barley, ZEGO oats are grown using a more rigorous and preventative approach called Purity Protocol, a patented farming method used to prevent gluten cross-contact in the field.â â
â
Hereâs how it works âŹď¸â
đą Our partner farmers save seeds from the previous yearâs crop, reducing unintended cross-contactâ
â
Our oats are grown from a special variety that is significantly shorter than wheat and barley.â
đ As the plants grow (but before they form grains), farm workers hand-pull any taller sprouts â removing the risk of gluten grains from entering the harvest.â
𧪠Then we test each batch down to 5 parts per million (ppm)â
â
Our dedicated facility is free from gluten and the top allergens. No peanuts, no wheat, no dairy, no tree nuts, no soy, no milk, no eggs, no sesame, no sulfites, no celery, no corn, and no mustard. Our packaging has no corn derivatives. â
â
đ The result?â
Some of the cleanest, safest oats you can buy â grown with care to nourish and protect your family.â
â
đ Curious about our testing? Just scan the QR code on any ZEGO package or visit our website to see your oatsâ results. Have questions? Drop them in the comments below or send us a DM!

đž Farm Visit Spotlight đž
Last month, Colleen and Cybele had the joy of visiting the Romsa Brothers Farm in Wyoming, as part of our mission with CIVC [Collaborative Integrated Value Chain]! Part of CIVC`s mission is to create a supply chain pull for millet, a highly nutritious grain that is used in organic and regenerative farming as a cover crop for other grains, like gluten-free oats! đą As fellow oat lovers, we all benefit from more people eating millet!
Not only does millet help with weed control and support healthy soil, itâs also naturally gluten-free, rich in fiber and minerals like magnesium and phosphorus, and thrives with less water than many other grains. A win for both people and the planet. đ
Have you ever tried millet? What did you think? Let us know in the comments below!

đžđ Celiac Disease Awareness Day | September 13
Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition where eating gluten damages the small intestine, making it hard to absorb nutrients and leading to long-term health challenges. For the 3 million people in the U.S. living with celiac, strict gluten-free safety is non-negotiable.
Thatâs why at ZEGO, we go beyond. Our oats are grown using a purity protocol â meaning from seed to harvest to packaging, we work directly with our farmers to ensure the highest standards of safety. Then, a third-party lab tests for gluten, glyphosate, heavy metals, and 500+ toxins so you can trust every bite.
đĄ Today and every day, we stand with the celiac community â advocating for transparency, safety, and food you can feel good about.
⨠Share this post to help raise awareness and spread the word: gluten-free isnât a trend â itâs a necessity.

đą What does âPurity Verifiedâ really mean? đąâ
On the front of every ZEGO package, youâll see the words Purity Verified and a QR code. But what does that stand for – and why does it matter?â
â
Every ZEGO product is tested by a third-party lab for:â
⢠Heavy metalsâ
⢠Glyphosate â
⢠500+ other agricultural toxins & contaminantsâ
â
We then publish those results and make them easily accessible through the QR code on each package. That way, you donât just have to trust us – you can see the proof for yourself.â
Why is this important? Because you deserve complete transparency about whatâs in your food. And because we believe that when more brands adopt Purity Verification, we can build a healthier food system and planet together. đâ¨â
đ˛ Next time you grab a ZEGO product, try scanning the QR code – your peace of mind is only a click away.
