Chlorpyrifos is one of the most toxic agricultural chemicals. But the last administration stopped a move to ban its use. Now a U.S. court steps in to give the EPA a directive, and a very short timeframe to act.
How Toxic is Chlorpyrifos and Who is at Risk?
Dow Chemical patented chlorpyrifos as a pesticide in 1966. It is an organophosphate chemical. Farmers, groundskeepers, and exterminators have used it for 65 years. It kills insects by inhibiting the essential enzyme activity that enables the messages that travel through nerve cells. Chlorpyrifos drifts through the air and poisons the lungs of people exposed to it. It also spreads its poison to people by clinging to fruits and vegetables and grass.
Tragically, it has proven to cause developmental damage even with a small exposure in fetuses and small children. Acute exposure can cause neuromuscular symptoms, seizures, lung failure, paralysis, and death. It is also toxic to bees and crustaceans.
How Do You Get Exposed to Chlorpyrifos?
Despite this toxicity, farmers, exterminators, and grounds keepers in the U.S. have used chlorpyrifos to control pests on
- corn
- soybeans
- fruit and nut trees
- Brussel sprouts
- cranberries
- broccoli and cauliflower
- golf courses
- turf
- termite control
- roach and ant traps
What Other Countries Have Banned It?
Many countries banned this toxin. And yet, the U.S. has continued using it to the present day. Here is the timeline.
- Singapore in 2009
- South Africa in 2010
- Denmark 2012
- European Union 2020
Why Hasn’t the U.S. Banned Chlorpyrifos?
Dow Chemical has lobbied hard for many years to keep chlorpyrifos on the market in the United States. The company asserts it is safe for use. And yet, the EPA has not been able to find a safe threshold of exposure. In fact, Dow paid a $2 million fine to the State of New York for claiming its product was safe. Here’s a quick timeline.
- 1989 OSHA set a maximum exposure level but it was later reversed by the U.S. Court of Appeals.
- 2000 The industry reached an agreement with the EPA to voluntarily restrict the use of chlorpyrifos near children.
- 2003 Dow Chemical paid a fine to NY State for claiming the chemical was safe.
- 2007 The Pesticide Action Network and Natural Resource Defense Council appealed to the EPA to ban chlorpyrifos.
- 2015 A U.S. Court of Appeals told the EPA to ban chlorpyrifo, stating the EPA had failed to show the chemical met legal safety requirements.
- 2016 The EPA decided to ban the chemical despite Dow Chemical’s persistent claims that it is safe and critical to growers.
- 2017 The Trump Administration’s Sec. of Agriculture Scott Pruit revoked the EPA ban. Pruitt claimed he had not met with Dow Chemical executives prior to revoking the ban. But it was later revealed he had met with them dozens of times and specifically told them he would revoke the ban.
- 2017 California adds chlorpyrifos to its Prop 65 list of toxic chemicals and set minimum exposure levels at .025PPB. The American Academy of Pediatrics protests the Administrations lack of movement on the ban, stating the chemical’s well-established danger to children.
- 2018 The U.S. Court of Appeals told the EPA to ban chlorpyrifos within 60 days but the ruling was appealed by the Trump Administration.
- 2020 California banned chlorpyrifos. Thailand bans the use of chlorpyrifos and paraquat and moves to ban imported foods grown by farmers using these chemcals. The US and Brazil appeal to the WTA to force Thailand to reverse its ban. it completely within 60 days.
Who’s to Blame for the Poisoning of America?
The history of chlorpyrifos is a lesson in the danger to people and our planet of taking on one toxic chemical at a time. Dow Chemical introduced chlorpyrifos to the market over 55 years ago. It’s been poisoning fetuses, children, and adults ever since. As far back as 1989 the U.S. government showed public concern over the chemical as seen in the OSHA exposure limits. And twenty years ago the industry publicly admitted it was toxic to children by agreeing to usage restrictions.
Yet, lawsuit after lawsuit, research evidence be damned, court orders disregarded, the EPA failed to protect the people and country it is chartered to protect. And, yes, the delay of the ban over the last five years is due to direct and malicious actions of the Trump Administration. But a handful of other Administrations — Republican and Democrat — could have banned this poison years ago and did not.
What Can We Learn about Glyphosate from the Chlorpyrifos Story?
The lesson is clear. We cannot achieve a cleaner world fighting one chemical at a time. As much as we know some chemicals like glyphosate and chlorpyrifos are perhaps more toxic or pervasive than some others, we cannot cherry pick the handful of worst offenders and try to pick them off one by one. There simply isn’t enough time (unless you think a standard of 50 or more years from introduction to ban to be your measure of success). We must get to the core of the problem.
- Companies must prove chemicals are safe before they are allowed to introduce them on the market.
- Consumers should have a right to know if there is toxic residue on their food.
- Because of their position between farms and consumers, brands, suppliers, and distributors should be the intermediary that requires testing from the farms. They also should test their final product for toxic residue and provide complete transparency to consumers. Finally, that transparency to consumers has to be provided in an actionable format — at a time when they are making purchasing or eating decisions. Consumers should not have to contact a customer service person to request the information.
How Can You Protect Your Loved Ones from Toxic Chemicals?
- Buy organic whenever possible but especially produce that you eat that cannot be peeled.
- Soak your produce in a solution of water with a bit of apple cider vinegar or baking soda or both.
- Buy from companies you trust. Avoid cheap food. Cheap can mean the farmer used a lot of chemicals to increase their yield so they can keep prices low.
- Ask brands you love to test their food and make the results publicly available.
- Contact the EPA and ask them to ban chlorpyrifos and to require chemical companies to prove their products are safe before they can be used. Consider tweeting them at https://twitter.com/epa.
Does ZEGO Test for Chlorpyrifos?

This is exactly the type of testing and transparency all brands should commit to. Why? Because if consumers aren’t informed about the prevalence of toxic residue in our agriculture system and on their food, they won’t have the information and inspiration to demand better. And, better is what we have to strive for every day.

🍎🧇This muesli batter makes the BEST gluten-free & vegan-friendly pancakes, waffles, and muffins!
Apple Cranberry Muesli Batter for Waffles, Pancakes, and Muffins
INGREDIENTS
1 c ZEGO Apple Cranberry Muesli
1 Tbs baking powder
1/8 tsp salt
3 tsp vanilla
4 dates (or 1 Tbs maple syrup)
1/2 cup milk or dairy-free milk
1 Tbs melted and cooled butter/ghee or olive oil (we love ghee)
DIRECTIONS
Put the muesli and salt in a food processor or blender and blend for about one minute.
Add the rest of the ingredients except the baking powder and blend for 30-60 seconds until the dates seem adequately incorporated into the batter.
Add the baking powder and stir with a fork just enough to combine. Over-stirring will decrease the bubbles in the batter and make your pancakes rise less. if you have time, let the batter rest for 50 minutes to give the oats a chance to soak up the liquid.
If your batter is too thin, you can stir in a couple tablespoons of rolled oats or ground muesli.
For Pancakes: Cook in a skillet or griddle on medium-low heat and flip as soon as you can so they don’t burn. Though you need enough heat for the pancakes to form their “feet” so you can flip them easily, we like to turn down the flame during cooking if the batter is really thick.
For Muffins: Bake at 350 for 15-25 minutes, depending on the size of the muffins.
For Waffles: We recommend using a large waffle maker instead of a mini as the mini doesn’t give the dough enough room to puff up. However, if you like really crispy waffles then a mini works great.

How to Make ZEGO Oatmeal Bake
Ingredients
3 c your favorite flavor of ZEGO Muesli or rolled oats
1/3 c cane sugar or maple syrup
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp ground cinnamon
scant 1/2 tsp fine-grain sea salt
2 c dairy-free milk
1 egg or substitute
3 tbs oil
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 bananas, cut into 1/2″ slices
1 1/2 c blueberries or mixed berries
Method
Preheat oven to 375 with a rack in the top third of the oven. Generously grease the inside of an 8-inch square baking dish.
In a bowl, mix together the muesli/oats, the sugar (if using), baking powder, cinnamon and salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the maple syrup (if using), the milk, egg, oil, and the vanilla.
Arrange the bananas in a single layer in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle 2/3 of the berries on top. Cover the fruit with the oat mixture.
Slowly drizzle the milk mixture over the oats. Gently give the baking dish a couple thwacks on the countertop to make sure the milk moves through the oats. Scatter the remaining berries across the top.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, until the top is golden and the oat mixture has set.
Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Sprinkle with a bit more sugar or drizzle with maple syrup, if you like.
Cool completely before cutting.

🌾🥕Oat Carrot Cookies✨
Craving a wholesome snack? Whip up a batch of these Oat Carrot Cookies made by @sweetorganicliving! This recipe reminds us of carrot cakes without the frosting (you can add a cream cheese frosting to make that a reality); this healthy alternative is egg-free, dairy-free, with no added sugars, no gums, and has our ZEGO Oats and Pure Plant Protein! 🍪🥕
🔸INGREDIENTS
2 Cup ZEGO oats
2 Cup shredded carrots (or add them whole if using a food processor)
2-3 smashed bananas
1/2 Cup ZEGO Pure Plant Protein
1/2 Cup unflavored Collagen
3 TBSP chia seeds
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 TBSP vanilla
1/3 cup optional mix-ins of your choice
OPTIONAL: chocolate chips, raisins, etc.
🔸METHOD
Mash up bananas, and shred carrots, then add oats, banana puree, baking powder, vanilla, protein powder, and collagen.
🔸OR IF USING A FOOD PROCESSOR
Add carrots and pulse
Add oats pulse
Add bananas, baking powder, vanilla, protein powder, collagen, and any optional add-ins.
Pulse until a desirable consistency then add chia and pulse.
🔸Scoop to on a baking sheet that is lined with parchment paper. Press gently.
Bake at 350 for about 15-20 minutes (more depending on how crispy you like them)
Enjoy your healthy Oat Carrot Cookies full of nutrients with no eggs, milk, or added sugars! 😋

💡Did you know that ZEGO’s raw Double Protein Oats make a great gluten-free sourdough starter, and they do it MUCH faster than oatmeal and flours that are not raw? 🌾 As you can see in the picture, ZEGO’s oatmeal grows almost 1/3 more in just the first 18 hours. And, it’s easy to do if you follow the instructions below.
Using our sourdough starter also makes recipes even more digestible than using just our gut-friendly Double Protein Oats. Sourdough adds prebiotic fiber and adds leavening to your dough, making the fluffiest pancakes, muffins, waffles, and more! 😋
How to Make Sourdough Starter with Raw Oatmeal
🔸Put about ½ cup of oats and ½ cup of water in a glass jar and stir with a wooden spoon or chopstick (or your finger).
🔸Leave it in a somewhat warm place (70 degrees F) covered loosely with a towel. Stir each day with a wooden spoon or your finger (no metal) until you notice small bubbles on the surface. (This may happen right away. )
🔸Once you see the bubbles, stir, and take out half the starter. This is called your “discard.”
🔸Immediately add in another ½ cup oats and ½ cup water. This is called “feeding” your starter.
🔸Once or twice a day, repeat this process for about 5-7 days.
🔸You can start using the discard for baking or oatmeal if it has developed a sour-sweet smell like sourdough bread. If it has an “off” taste or smell, do not eat it. It isn’t ready yet, and it will give you a tummy ache!
🔷The starter can be kept in the fridge for 5 days before needing to be fed again.

After an incredible journey filled with anticipation, we are thrilled to share some amazing news with all of you! 🌟 ZEGO has been awarded a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of the USDA Organic Market Development Grant initiative!!
We couldn’t be more grateful for this incredible opportunity to make a positive impact in our community and beyond.
So, what does this mean for ZEGO and our community? This grant will allow us to:
🌾 Increase the processing and consumption of organic, gluten-free, high-protein oats and rotational crop millet in Montana and the surrounding region by establishing a Collaborative Integrated Value Chain (CVIC).
🌱 Expand the organic processing capacity at Montana Gluten Free (MGF), developmore products from organic specialty grains for individuals with medically restricted diets or dietary preferences, increase consumer demand for organic grains, and benefit the environment by reducing transportation miles and promoting sustainable farming practices.
🛠️ Upgrade equipment, upgrade our food safety level certification, establish procurement contracts with regional farmers, and lower costs for consumers.
💡Develop 3-5 new organic specialty grain products in collaboration with @snacktivistfoods . These products will target markets such as food service accounts and big box stores, expanding our reach and accessibility.
🔍 Additionally, we’re thrilled to announce our collaboration with Food Viiision to enhance ZEGO’s purity transparency system. This partnership will make product information more accessible to consumers, ensuring greater transparency and trust.
