Last Updated on September 12, 2021 by Colleen

Store-bought, gluten-free oat milk is hard to find and expensive. In addition, it often has hidden oat starch sugar, chemicals, gluten, gums, and defoamers.

But no need to worry because, in 15 minutes, you can make organic, gluten-free oat milk fresh from ZEGO Double Protein Oats and have peace of mind with every delicious serving.

Read more about store-bought brands in our blog.

Gluten Free Oat Milk

INGREDIENTS

Makes 2+ cups oat milk

  • 4T (1/4c) ZEGO Double Protein Oats
  • approx. 1/3 cup boiling water
  • small pinch of salt
  • 2 cups water
  • Optional: 1/2t vanilla, 1t maple syrup
  • Optional: to make creamier, add 1t organic, unrefined avocado oil, high oleic sunflower oil, or mild flavor EVOO

METHOD

  1. Put oats in a small bowl, cup or other heat friendly container.
  2. Pour boiling water over the oats to cover generously (approx. 1/3 cup).
  3. Let sit 10-15 minutes to soften oats and eliminate any bitterness.
  4. Add to blender with 2C water and a tiny amount of salt and blend for 30 seconds.
  5. Use as is for smoothies and milk.

    TIPS
For smoother milk, strain through a strainer lined with cheese cloth.

STORING: Keeps up to 1 week in the refrigerator in a glass jar. Shake to remix if needed.

SMOOTHIES: decrease water and add frozen fruit or ice cubes with your other ingredients.

No need to buy dairy-free milk anymore! With this recipe, you can have creamier milk, better nutrition, and gluten-free and allergy-free safety.

What we also love about this recipe is that we aren’t burdening the environment by buying the plastic containers used for most non-dairy milks. And, we don’t put extra carbon in the air by shipping our non-dairy milk around the country that is mostly water.

It’s good for us AND good for the planet.

That’s the ZEGO way.

New York, we’re coming for you. 🗽

🌾 What Is Muesli?🌾

Wondering what muesli is? Pronounced “myoo-slee,” it’s traditionally a wholesome combination of rolled oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits, rich in fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats. This nutrient-dense blend supports heart health, digestion, and sustained energy levels throughout the day.

ZEGO’s organic muesli is free from nuts and gluten and can be enjoyed with milk or a milk alternative, just like the other cereals in your pantry. 🥛🌿Pro-Tip: Soaking your muesli in your favorite version of milk or water will make it easier to digest and make the nutrients more bio-available by decreasing phytates and lectins. Soak for 5+ minutes or longer for softer oats.

Jay Romsa, of Romsa Family Farms, is one of our incredible featured farmers.

He's and a very talented farmer with a background in crop science and a pretty humble guy. You might recognize him from our Natural Products Expo West panel on specialty grain supply chains.

But what you might not know is that Jay matches our affinity for gluten-free oats.

"I opted for early retirement to help my son establish his link in the legacy I devoted my career to agriculture. I achieved my degree in crop science and conducted research on multiple crops and production systems. My career ended focusing on the benefits of oats while working in the food industry.

Oats are one of the most nutrient dense grains you can consume offering the benefits of satiety, low glycemic index, soluble fiber in the form of beta glucan helping with heart health and cholesterol reduction, loaded with essential amino acids, when grown in a gluten free system can be labeled as gluten free, loaded with essential amino acids and higher protein levels make them one of the healthiest grains you can consume."

We love a farmer who loves oats!

Is there such thing as too much fiber?

While we recently highlighted how great fiber is, and how most adults in the US need to be eating more of it - can there be too much of a good thing?

YES! Especially when you add too much fiber to your diet too quickly. This can cause gas, bloating, and and other GI side effects, like diarrhea. And if you add too much fiber with not enough water, there's even a risk of intestinal blockages.

That's why we say start low and go slow to introduce more fiber into your diet. Have a question about fiber? Ask your dietitian!
